Hydrogen Sulfide

Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S), a colorless, flammable, toxic gas with the odor of rotten eggs, is normally regarded as a contaminant in natural gas. It certainly does have its uses, however – which is the reason PurityPlus® Specialty Gases by Weldstar Hydrogen Sulfide available at competitive prices.

High levels of Hydrogen Sulfide can be removed from “sour” natural gas fields to limit corrosion in collection and transmission pipeline systems, which improves the natural gas’s heat content and transforming it to make it a more commercial product. The collected Hydrogen Sulfide is most often converted to elemental sulfur by means of monitored oxidation. Relatively small quantities of H₂S are subsequently dried and purified for commerce.

Hydrogen Sulfide is sometimes used to produce metal sulfides and as a reactive gas in the synthesis of high-purity mercaptans. It is often associated in error with the smell of commercial natural gas; normally natural gas is odorized with mixtures of ethyl, propyl, and butyl mercaptan to provide the “rotten egg” smell without the corrosion hazard of Hydrogen Sulfide in a moist application.

In the specialty gas marketplace, H₂S is often a component in calibration gases for environmental emission and industrial hygiene regulation in the parts per million (ppm) range.
